Rich Text Editor

I must say that the WYISWYG Rich Text Editors for web are much better now than they were 3 years ago when I checked them last time.

The innova studio commercial editor, is now not much better than the free (almost) CKEditor. I admit that the file manager wich requires commercial licence for CKEditor even better than the one that comes with innova. The total price is almost the same, but one can easily enjoy upgrades for the CK, and a huge community that supports it – realy helps. If I have to make a chaice today, I will probably prefer the CK over the Innova.

The worst business scenario

As far as I see it the worst business scenario is when you have a great idea, a perfectly free market without competitors, a huge pool of leads and potential customers who are willing to pay, but instead of turning it into a succefull business, fights between partners tore the company apart…

SVN UTF8 Error

An intresting error occured today, whil trying to do any SVN command I got the message:

svn: Valid UTF-8 data
(hex:)
followed by invalid UTF-8 sequence
(hex: b8 b4 bc fe)

It took me a while to get the solution, but there it is: it happens beacuse there is some corruption in file names (ususally from Windows). The solution wa simple – to narrow the search fro the folder with the corrupted file name, delete the corrupted file and the check it out from the repository again.

Technion job

Ok, as I said earlier in application selection posts, the job is speeding up. The pressure is there, although it is still very diffrent from private companies. No one expects you to do a month job within a couple of days. If a task is supposed to take a week – you will have 10 days to do it, but you should provide the best possible results. Eventually you do the task in 3 days, because there is no special pressure, and you do deliver the best results.

I must say that Tom Demarko was right in his book “Deadline” – programmers will not thnk faster if you stress them with unrealistic deadlines.

Application Selection – continued.

Budget limits are a very powerful constraint. I found a great application that can handle 99% of my demands, but that will cost us over 20K$/Year – I do not have such budget.
However there are free alternatives, that have open source, well documented API and large community. I am checking the alternative now, hopefully the customisation will not be too much difficult.

A new job

Yesterday I started a new job: IT Engineer at the Technion EE Department. I must say that it is so diferenet from my last jobs… The speed of life is like a slow motion movie play…

DB Optimization

I must say that this is one of the most difficult tasks I have ever handled. You count miliseconds and eventually once you managed to cut a few, you find out that this is not enough…

Arghhhh…..

My new job

Starting July 03, 2008 I am the CTO of BMBY Software Systems Ltd.
